Blue Number Nine An amazing live phenomenon and 7 members deep, blue number nine's goal is Funkification of the planet. It's nothing less than a tornado on the stage and an earthquake in the crowd whenever this tight and lively unit kicks out their original jams. Formed in Jersey City in 1995, with members from NJ and NY, blue number nine is lead by Stefanie Seskin (lead vocals/flute/co-songwriter), a former soccer jock who holds a Master's in Communications. Kim Preston (keyboards and co-songwriter) owned a pirate radio station run out of his basement. Minoru Kikuchi (guitar) is from Japan. Marco Accattatis (bass) is from Italy. Jack M. Gourdine II (drums) is an Army brat from Okinawa.and Diane & Amanda Chiorello belt out back up vocals. Together they are as one - mind, body and soul. The music is a blend of eclectic, danceable yet listenable funk, jazz, pop and all manner of rhythm and groove and at times, they bring in horns and percussion to fatten up the mix further. Cross The Brand New Heavies and Rickie Lee Jones, throw in some 70s family groove, and you get blue number nine - diverse and eclectic songs laid down with infectious energy - a first-rate debut, fun, honest and catchy. The musicianship sparkles throughout, and Stefanie Seskin proves to be a wordsmith of much wit . As she said in a recent interview, Seskin writes about life's ups and downs, mostly from her experience but then often taken beyond reality in the style of Magical Realism which she studied in college - the tongue in cheek analogies of sweet sugar honey - the sassy funkiness of Hook In - the joyful musings of Coming Back Human. The balance of the songs are equally engaging, from lilting melodies to jazzy funk, pensive and intimate to silly and fun, blue number nine's music invites you to dance or to linger, ponder, and smile knowingly before moving on. A terrific first outing from a fine and accomplished group whose current creations are proof positive that their future bears watching.
